The day started out just as hot but even smokier. It was too much.
I expect there to be hardships and difficulties on any long hike but also expect some compensation in the form of great views and beautiful scenery. There are no views and the landscape is desiccated. Most water sources are dried up and we are doing 10 and 20 mile water carries. The air is foul with smoke and it hurts to breathe.
Lava flows, presumably from Mt McLoughlin, appeared. Fortunately some stellar trail work had been done here to create a smooth and walkable path. Crossing over the lava fields would otherwise have been slow, painful and dangerous.
The smoke was so bad that I put on an N95 mask despite the heat. I am seriously worried that I am damaging my lungs.
It was an easy call to cut down the two miles to Fish Lake resort where there is food and showers, but most of all, cold drinks. I’ll spend the night here and hope for better conditions tomorrow.
