A challenging day, 22 miles down to the hot springs at mile 308. Although mostly downhill, that’s a lot of walking, especially after doing 20 the day before. A bit shy of a marathon, but a long way. And to get to Canada before the snow flies, hikers have to do these kinds of miles on a regular basis.
The result is a significant physical toll. Like penitents, hikers are marked by stigmata: blistered feet, shoulders and hips rubbed raw, chafing in the nether regions. Although hikers don’t seek out the pain, they have to deal with it. Ibuprofen is consumed in large quantities, but ultimately one must learn to “embrace the brutality”, as the saying goes.
Fortunately there are rewards as well, and soaking in a hot spring in a desert canyon is one of them.
